Every Man in the House Should Have These Handyman Skills
It is understandable why you would prefer to leave it to the professional handyman service when it comes to heavier handyman jobs, such as significant electrical repairs, deep plumbing, or anything involving a septic tank. But most importantly, being able to take care of things on your own will boost your self-esteem and sense of ownership over your house, which will make it more likely that you’ll pick up further handyman skills as your confidence increases. Men used to naturally learn a lot of fundamental carpentry, plumbing, electricity, and other maintenance skills from their fathers, but for those of you who missed out on these lessons, here are some talents any guy should possess to be the master of his domain.
Fix a Loose Tile
This is a small issue that should be rectified before it becomes worse because loose or wobbling tiles are the precursors to broken tiles. To remove a loose tile, first, loosen the adhesive by running a hot iron over it and the surrounding area. Then, carefully lift the tile out. To completely remove the old glue, wipe the area underneath with alcohol before using the putty knife to scrape it clean. After reapplying tile glue to the gap and the tile’s back, carefully replace the tile. Clean up any extra adhesive on or around the tile after pressing the tile into place and eliminating any air bubbles with a rolling pin.
Change a Shower Head
Use a wrench to loosen the notch on the old shower head, then use your hands to screw off the old head. Remove any gunk or residue from the area surrounding the old shower head stem by scrubbing it off with a rag dipped in vinegar or a tiny amount of alcohol. Apply several layers of Teflon tape to the stem pipe’s end, and then use your fingers to smooth the tape. Install the replacement head, turning it manually clockwise onto the pipe. Check for leaks by turning on the shower; if there are any, use a wrench to progressively tighten the replacement shower head while being careful, not to overtighten it.
